Cerebral palsy in adults

The early brain changes stay the same, but bodies change with age. A short guide.

Awaiting clinical review. This page is written from general, widely accepted background on how eating and swallowing work. It has not yet been signed off by a named clinician, and it is not a substitute for asking one.

Why swallowing can change

Cerebral palsy comes from changes in the brain early in life. Those brain changes stay the same.

But muscles, posture and energy can change as adults age. Swallowing trouble is more common in adults with CP.

What you might notice

  • Coughing at meals more often than before.
  • Drooling, or trouble closing the lips.
  • Chewing that tires you out.
  • Chest infections.

What can help

You know how you eat best. These are options to weigh.

  • Good seating and support, so your head and trunk are steady.
  • Taking your time, with smaller bites.
  • A swallow check if something changes. An SLP can explain what it shows and the options.
  • Keeping your mouth clean, to help protect your chest.

Questions to ask your care team

  • Is this change worth a swallow check?
  • Could my seating or posture be adjusted for meals?
  • Who can help with drooling?
  • Could any medicines affect my alertness or saliva?

When to get help

Get checked soon if you notice any of these. A doctor or SLP can look at what is going on.

You know your own body best. Bring what you notice to your care team, and decide together.

  • Coughing or choking when you eat or drink.
  • Food or pills that feel stuck.
  • Losing weight without trying.
  • Pneumonia or chest infections, especially if they come back.

When this is worth asking about

  • Someone cannot breathe, speak or cough. Call 911.
  • A change in how eating feels.
  • Weight loss, or chest infections.
